The big boom challenge to stop motor neuron disease

THE BIG BOOM CHALLENGE: To Stop Motor Neuron Disease

13 September 2019

The Big Boom Challenge is a 24hr long continuous ride for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. It was conceived by one of Boom Cycle's very first regular riders Simon Brennan (since the Shoreditch basement days) who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in early 2019. Since the diagnosis he has been raising money for the foundation which funds research and provides financial and emotional support to sufferers of MND.

Find out more about Simon's story here.

We are pleased to announce that we'll be hosting The Big Boom Challenge together with Simon in aid of the foundation on the 18th & 19th October at Boom Cycle Waterloo and YOU could be part of this awesome movement!

Our group of Boom Cycle instructors will be leading the ride throughout the 24 hours with our signature high-energy and boomin' tunes, so stay tuned on our social media on who's getting involved with you!

Who?

Anyone can take part in The Big Boom Challenge! There will be two categories of participants with different entry criteria:

1. “In-it-to-win-it” (competitive) category

  • Eligible for prizes based on money raised

  • In teams of 6 and will ride in pairs. Each pair will ride for 2 hours together then take a 4-hour break while their teammates take over. Repeat 4 times for a total of 24 hours.

2. “Joyful Journey” (non-competitive) category

• Teams of between 1-24 people. They can tag in and out of the bikes as many times as they wish, although always on the hour. Example: one person could do 24 hours on the bike or 24 people could do 1-hour each. As long as somebody from the team is on the bike for the whole 24 hours anything goes!

When?

The 24hr spinathon will begin at 7pm on Friday 18th October with a 6pm check in.

A celebratory after-party will begin at 7pm on Saturday 19th October with 31DOVER supporting with drinks.

Where?

It's all happening at our newest studio, Boom Cycle Waterloo!

Address is 4 Milner Place, London, SE1 7PE

Are there different sponsorship requirements for each type of team?

Yes. The ”In-it-to-win-it” teams must raise a minimum of £1,000 per person or £6,000 per team. The team that raises the most money will also win a prize package for each team member worth around £300 per person.

We encourage “Joyful Journey” teams to raise as much money as they can for the challenge. In general, we recommend to raise £2,400 per team for the challenge or £100 per hour.

How do I raise sponsorship money?

We would like every individual or team to set up a JustGiving page which will then point to a ‘Team Page’. Then you can charm, cajole and beg your friends, family and colleagues to support this excellent cause. Once you have raised the required amount of money you are in! Once you have set up your JustGiving page please email Alastair (details below) to be added to the team page.

I want to do it competitively but I don’t think I can get a team of six. Can I still take part?

Yes! We can allocate you to an “all-star” team where you will be teamed with people in a similar position to you.

What do I need to bring?

You should bring appropriate clothes to cycle in and a water bottle. If you wish to stay in the studio during your time off the bike, you may bring a sleeping bag to sleep in as there will be a dedicated space for rest and recovery. Spinning shoes (cleats), lockers, shower facilities, toiletries and towels will be provided.

What about food and drink?

Food and drink will be provided by Boom Cycle’s nutrition partners.
